New Zealand’s Renewable Uptake
New Zealand has a very progressive approach to energy efficiency and renewable energy. In fact, a recently announced multibillion-dollar proposal to build a pumped hydro storage plant could push the country closer than ever to reaching a 100% renewable energy target.
The charge towards 100% renewable energy
New Zealand currently generates around 80% of its electricity from renewable energy sources, and about half of that comes from hydro. However, forecasting has revealed that in future dry years, the country’s hydro infrastructure won’t be enough to meet demand. The proposed hydro plant storage aims to pump river or lake water into hydro dams when needed.
The country also has a plan to reach zero net carbon emissions by 2050, but experts suggest renewable energy generation would need to increase by around 70% in that time. With a goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2035, the hydro plan could help the country get there. However, there still needs to be considerable investment in wind and solar farms.
