PROJECT DETAILS
Winston Nutritional Ltd, Established in 2015, the business acquired the large capacity, high-speed infant formula manufacturing plant in Mt Wellington, Auckland and completed a comprehensive modernization programme, including investing in new state-of-the-art technology and machinery, in 2017.
The project’s requirement was to control indoor temperatures at 25°C with relative humidity where possible below 65%, whilst all doors are closed during normal working hours, during average use of the space.
Planning was done to regulate temperatures in their storeroom of approximately 1300m² and 6m heightat 25 °C with 75~65% RH. In 2020 during the summer months, temperatures recorded during November 2019 – February 2020 ranged between 28.3°C to 32.5°C which was not ideal.
Due to the large storeroom space, vast amount of ducting was required to deliver air and to distribute conditioned air across all areas of the storeroom. The large amount of materials and the complicated installation were found to be the reasons for the high cost which caused some suppliers to decline the project.
The team at RCR reviewed the new technology of a jet diffuser which would increase the static pressure to 700pa and increase the throw of airflow 10 times longer than the regular diffuser, to 45m. The technical team made multiple calculations knowing the design were bold and critical to work effectively. After much deliberation, the technical team settled on the design consisting of:
- Two package ducting systems —160kw.
- Installing the outdoor unit on the ground instead of the roof.
- Run the supply ducting and return insulation ducting from the outside.
- Install the filtration system on the internal wall.
- Installation of four Jet Diffusers ɸ630mm.
Key Objectives
- Two concrete base constructions
- Supply and install two Daikin package units 84 kW AHU.
- Supply and install return/supply air ducting
- Supply and install jet diffusers.
- Supply and install return air grills
- Penetration on the sidewall.
- Supply and install the remote controller.
- Commissioning of system installed by RCR.
- E for M work to the isolation switch
What made it a success?
The project took around 3 months to install with the results the team anticipated. Tests during the commissioning proved the temperature control to be effective and the system working as planned.
The RCR team delivered excellent work resulting in a happy customer. The project was closely managed and resulted in some great outcomes:
- The installation costs were reduced by $50K compared to other supplier quotes.
- The running costs are 23% lower than anticipated.
- MPI reviewed and passed the auditing, WNL received the required permit and license.
- The project resulted in additional projects for WNL.
- The project required 2 to 3 staff to manage this project, savings on labour costs.
How RCR Added Value
Through hard work and continuous communication on this project RCR achieved a good outcome for both parties, this resulted in a mutually beneficial relationship between WNL and RCR.
